Artusi in Brightspace (D2L)

Modified on Thu, Sep 17 at 4:46 PM

1. Register Artusi (Brightspace administrator, once)

You need the registration link from Artusi support. See Start here for how to get one. Registration has three parts in Brightspace: the registration itself, a deployment, and a link.

Register

  1. Click the gear icon, then Manage Extensibility, then the LTI Advantage tab.
  2. Click Register Tool and choose Dynamic.
  3. Paste the Artusi registration link and click Register. Artusi’s page opens in a new window and completes on its own.
  4. The window closes itself. If it stays open, close it: the registration is complete and does not need to be repeated.
  5. Back in Brightspace, open the new Artusi registration and make sure Enabled is on.

Create a deployment

  1. On the LTI Advantage tab, click Deployments, then New Deployment.
  2. Choose the Artusi registration and name the deployment “Artusi”.
  3. Under Extensions, check Assignment and Grade Services.
  4. Under Security Settings, check Org Unit Information, User Information, and Email. Without these Artusi cannot identify users.
  5. Under Configuration Settings, check Open as External Resource and Grades created by LTI will be included in Final Grade. Artusi must not run inside a frame on the Brightspace page, or its sign-in page refuses to load. Instructors also set this on each topic (section 2).
  6. Under Make tool available to, add the org units whose courses will use Artusi, with descendants included.
  7. Save.

Create a link

  1. Open the deployment and click View Links, then New Link.
  2. Name it “Artusi”.
  3. Set URL to https://www.artusimusic.com/ltia/launch/
  4. Set Type to Basic Launch. Leave the Deep Linking options off.
  5. Save.

Instructors in the org units you chose can now add Artusi to their courses.

2. Add an Artusi assignment (instructor, once per assignment)

Each Brightspace topic is linked to one Artusi assignment.

On Artusi: use an assignment you already have, or create one. This video shows how.

In Brightspace, add a new topic for it:

  1. Open Content and go to the module where the assignment belongs.
  2. Click Existing Activities, then External Learning Tools.
  3. Choose Artusi. A new topic appears in the module.
  4. Rename the topic to match the assignment.
  5. Set the topic to open in a new tab. This is required even when the deployment has the same setting: the topic’s own setting is the one Brightspace uses. Where to find it depends on which Content layout your school uses:

    • Newer layout (an Edit Activity button at the top right of the topic): click Edit Activity, turn on the option to open the link in a new tab, and save.
    • Older layout (a dropdown arrow beside the topic’s name): open the dropdown, choose Edit Properties In-place, and check Open as External Resource.
  6. Students then see an Open Link button that opens Artusi in a new tab.

  7. Attach a grade item: open the topic’s menu, choose Edit Properties, and find the Assessment or Grade Item option. Choose Create a new grade item and set its maximum to the points you want. A grade item is a column in the Grades tool, not an item in the Assignments tool. Only pick an existing grade item if it is not already tied to another activity. Without a grade item, scores cannot reach the gradebook.

Now link it to the Artusi assignment:

  1. Click the topic. Artusi opens in a new tab.
  2. The first time from this Brightspace course, Artusi asks which Artusi course it belongs to. Pick one. Each Brightspace course links to one Artusi course, so if you teach several sections, make a separate Artusi course for each.
  3. Artusi shows the assignments in that course. Pick the one this topic should open.

Students who click the topic now land on the Artusi assignment, signed in.

3. Grades

Scores appear in the grade item you attached in section 2. For more information, see How Artusi sends grades to your LMS.

4. Troubleshooting

Artusi is not listed under External Learning Tools. The deployment is not available to this course’s org unit, or the link was not created. Ask your administrator to check section 1.

Artusi says your school did not send an email address. The deployment’s Security Settings are missing User Information or Email. Ask your administrator to check section 1.

Artusi says your school’s LMS is not registered. The link points at a registration that was removed or disabled. Ask your administrator to check which registration the deployment uses.

The topic shows “artusi.auth0.com refused to connect.” The topic is opening Artusi inside a frame, and Artusi’s sign-in page refuses to load in one. Set the topic to open in a new tab. See section 2, step 5.

Artusi opens but is blank or keeps asking you to log in. Same cause as above. Check the topic’s Open as External Resource setting, or see Third-party cookies.

Grades never appear, and the topic has no grade item attached. See section 2, step 6. For other causes, see Common problems in any LMS.
