Third-party cookies

Artusi may refuse to load inside your LMS, show a blank box, or keep asking you to sign in. This page explains why.

What is going on

When you sign in to Artusi, your browser remembers that you are signed in. It does this with a cookie: a tiny record the website stores in your browser.

If your LMS shows Artusi inside a box on its own page, the browser sees two websites at once: your LMS, and Artusi inside it. Modern browsers do not let the inner website store a cookie. So Artusi cannot remember that you signed in, and you see a sign-in screen, a blank box, or a “refused to connect” message.

Nothing is broken on your computer. The browser is doing what it was designed to do.

The fix: open Artusi in its own tab

Every LMS has a setting for this, and each Artusi guide includes it as a required step:

• Canvas: check Load This Tool In A New Tab on each assignment.
• Brightspace: set each Content topic to open in a new tab, under Edit Activity in the newer Content layout or Edit Properties In-place in the older one. The deployment has the same setting, but the topic’s setting is the one that applies.
• Moodle: the administrator sets Default launch container to New window on the tool. Instructors can confirm it on each activity.
• Blackboard: Ultra items have Open in new window on by default. Original view items need Open in New Window set to Yes.

Once that is on, students do not need to change anything on their own computers.

If Artusi must stay inside the LMS page

Each student has to tell their browser to allow cookies from inner websites. Browsers call these “third-party cookies.”

Safari: in Settings, Privacy, turn off Prevent cross-site tracking and make sure Block all cookies is off.

Chrome: open chrome://settings/cookies and choose Allow third-party cookies.

Firefox: in Settings, Privacy & Security, under Enhanced Tracking Protection choose Custom, uncheck Cookies, then click Reload all tabs.

This lowers the browser’s privacy protection for every website, not just Artusi, which is why opening Artusi in its own tab is the better fix.
